Coaching Staff

My Name: Garrett Lewellen

Team: 16 Copper

Certifications:

IMPACT – USA Volleyball
SafeSport

Coaching Experience:

In High school spent a summer at a camp in Minnesota helping teach volleyball skills.
While in undergrad had the opportunity to help out with the girls team at Antelope Valley Community College.
Coached and taught at summer volleyball camps at Ambassador University.
2019 Coached 14 Bronze

Playing Experience:

I first played organized volleyball for Quartz Hill High School my senior year (the program started my junior year and I was foolish not to play then).
I had the opportunity to play volleyball in college for Ambassador University (since has closed). It was a very small school (~1000 student body) but we had a coach that went big. We were able to travel and play schools such as Ohio State, Loyola of Chicago, Lewis University. In addition we played club teams (these schools didn’t have school sponsored programs yet) such as Baylor University, Arizona St., and Florida.

Coaches Outlook:

I want kids to learn that hard work and focus on strengthening weaknesses is thrilling.

Why I Love Coaching:

I love coaching because I love teaching and motivating. Teaching is best when the student is motivated to learn and that is often the environment in coaching. Some of my fondest coaching moments are not necessarily of games won, but of kids who overcame weaknesses, whether mentally, emotionally, or physically. I know what it was liked to be motivated and taught by good coaches and the feeling I got when I overcame and to see it take place in a kid that’s being coached is special. There are few things in life better than overcoming.
I also love coaching for the unity that comes from a team that grows together – especially through hardship.
Really I believe coaching is a powerful tool to help others grow in life – we all participate in that.
